Middle Barton School

Types of Governor

Although all School Governors have an equal standing within the Governing Body, there are differences in how the Governors are appointed.

Headteacher Governor
The headteacher is automatically a member of the Governing Body for the duration of their employment.

Staff Governor
Staff governors are elected to join the Governing Body by the other staff members. On the Middle Barton School Governing Body, we have two staff governors, one elected from the teaching staff and one elected from the non-teaching staff.

Parent Governor
Parent governors are elected to join the Governing Body by the rest of the parents. A parent governor does not need to have any educational or business background, but must have parental responsibility for a child at Middle Barton School at the time they are elected. On the Middle Barton School Governing Body, we have five parent governors.

LA Governor
LA governors are appointed by the local authority - they will normally have had some professional connection with the local authority. On the Middle Barton School Governing Body, we have three LA governors.

Co-opted Governor
Co-opted governors are taken from the wider community and are appointed directly by the Governing Body. On the Middle Barton School Governing Body, we have four co-opted governors.

Associate Governor
Associate governors are appointed at the discretion of the Governing Body, and although they are entitled to join in the Governing Body discussions, they will only have voting rights if specifically agreed in advance by the remaining members.
