Strategic Plan

Introduction

This strategic plan sets out the vision, values and aims of Middle Barton School.  It also sets out some broad activities for realising each aim.

A separate School Development Plan each year focuses on key issues arising from realising these aims and identifies how we will tackle these issues. There is also a 3 year School Development Plan which looks at the longer term aims and vision for the school.

Vision

Our vision statement is as follows:

‘At Middle Barton School we believe that inspired teaching and leadership is the bedrock to help, motivate and develop children to reach their full potential.  Through our care, respect for each other and sense of belonging, we aim to encourage excellence, valuing uniqueness in all children in our community.  We provide a broad and exciting curriculum to promote achievement and our team are committed to developing the whole child in becoming a happy, balanced and responsible citizen.’

Values and ethos

At Middle Barton School we recognise that relationships are key to building a successful learning environment.  We recognise that we have a key role to play in equipping pupils with the skills and knowledge they need for life.  We promote fundamental British values through spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and the following values underpin all our work:

  • Love

  • Care

  • Trust

  • Support

  • Compassion

  • Thoughtfulness

Aims

We seek to turn the vision outlined above into reality through the following broad aims, broken down into learning, people and resources.

Learning: Ensuring that all children are able to achieve their full potential through developing high quality learning experiences for all children and providing a rich learning community.

People: Being open, taking initiative and responsive and making sure that every child matters.

Resources: Creating the best possible environment for learning and managing the resources to maximise our effectiveness and efficiency.

Learning

Our immediate learning community includes the village of Middle Barton and surrounding villages of Sandford St. Martin, Duns Tew, Somerton and Steeple Aston.  Our learning community includes being part of Chipping Norton Partnership of Primary and Secondary Schools.  The network and additional learning opportunities these provide enhance our school.  It also allows opportunities to network with other small schools, sharing knowledge and expertise with schools in similar contexts.  We are a thriving village school and the number on roll has risen from 95 in 2013 to 104 in 2014 to 124 in 2015 to 128 in 2016 and to 137 in 2017.

Our community encompasses the local churches (Sandford St. Martin, Westcote Barton and Steeple Barton) and this brings positive links with Reverend Arthur and the parish.

We aim to provide high quality teaching and learning by using robust data and tracking it effectively for individuals and groups.

We consider effective marking and feedback to be a crucial part of the learning process.

High priority is given to reporting and communicating clearly and regularly with parents, children, governors and community.

We cater for learning needs in the form of Special Educational Needs and children who are Able, Gifted and Talented.

We aim to ensure our curriculum is broad and balanced to meet the needs of pupils.

We provide training for staff to ensure that they can teach with confidence and competence.  We expect homework activities to enhance and support the work done in class.

We consider the arts and PE to be strengths of the school and this is reflected in the rich provision in these areas.

People

We aim to celebrate success, both individual and class success through celebration assemblies, displays, our website and through newsletters (from school and through local press publications – Dorn Free Press, The Bulletin and Chipping Norton News).

Our PSCHE programme aims to ensure that pupils have the emotional skills to fully engage in learning.

Safeguarding pupils is of paramount importance and we ensure that all staff are fully trained and updated as appropriate.

We work with parents and outside agencies to promote attendance and punctuality.  Our School Council and Pupil Leadership Team are used to represent the views of our pupils and take on responsibilities for leading within the school.

The staff are committed to working as a team, with leaders being effective role-models as team-players and displaying a positive mindset, with staff morale and welfare being of high importance.

We are always looking for ways to improve our practice, reflecting on current practice and taking on board ideas for positive ways forward, liaising with parents, governors, community and outside agencies as appropriate.

Resources

We aim to provide the best possible environment for learning, abiding by the Health and Safety requirements.

We ensure that the classrooms, cloakrooms and corridors are aesthetically pleasing, as well as maximising the opportunities in the outdoor space.

We plan to make our ICT provision up-to-date so that we are equipping children for life in the 21st century.

We manage our budget to fulfil the above within the limits of financial constraints.
